Explore Puerto Rico... La Isla del Encanto

Puerto Rican flag waving against a sunset over the ocean Garita at Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, illuminated under a night sky.First thing is first! Grab your non-toxic sunscreen because I think, we should explore… PUERTO RICOOOO! Often referred to as “La Isla del Encanto”. Puerto Rico is a tropical paradise with a unique blend of history, adventure and natural wonders. Of course I may be little bit biased, as I mentioned in the Who am I page, I was born and raised here, but even if that weren’t the case this place is just magical.

Whether you’re a beach lover, an adventure junkie, or a history enthusiast, Puerto Rico has something to captivate everyone. Consequently, here’s a list of my top 10 spots that you absolutely must not miss when you visit this Caribbean gem.

My Top 10 Must-Visit Spots in Puerto Rico

1. La Placita de Santurce

To kick off this blog, let’s first dive into my absolute FAVORITE spot for experiencing the lively night scene and salsa dancing. La Placita de Santurce, a bustling market by day, transforms into a vibrant hub of nightlife as the sun sets. This place truly offers an authentic Puerto Rican experience that you won’t find anywhere else. Immerse yourself in the pulsating rhythms of salsa, mingling with both locals and tourists alike. Additionally, La Placita boasts an array of restaurants and bars, inviting you to dive into a plethora of local flavors and unique cocktails. It’s the perfect blend of culture, cuisine, and celebration under the Caribbean sky.

2. Old San Juan

Since you’re likely flying into SJU airport, it makes perfect sense to stay in the area during a few days. Why not take advantage of this opportunity? You can spend your day or night exploring the vibrant local scene. Clearly, this is a destination you shouldn’t miss out on experiencing to the fullest.

If yours adventure is during the day:
  • First and foremost, treat yourself to a gelato at Anitas. Even if there’s a line, it’s absolutely worth the wait – trust me on this one!
  • As you meander through the enchanting streets, make sure to carve out time to explore El Morro. This historic site offers delightful activities, from flying a kite to enjoying a “piragua.” However, when it comes to La Perla, exercise a bit of caution. While it’s an area rich in character, it’s best explored with a local guide, especially if it’s not during a major event like “Fiestas de la Calle Sanse.” The local community is fantastic but protective, so unfamiliar visitors should be mindful of their surroundings. Safety should always be a priority as you immerse yourself in the culture.
  • When it comes to dining in Old San Juan, my top pick is Raices for authentic local cuisine. However, to experience the very best culinary offerings, I recommend venturing beyond the tourist spots. That’s where you’ll find the real gems and authentic Puerto Rican flavors!
If your adventure leads you into the night:
  • Firstly, if you’ve ever found yourself grooving to Despacito from Luis Fonsi,” then a visit to La Factoria is a must. This famed locale was part of the backdrop for the hit music video.
  • Secondly, for beer enthusiasts or those who simply enjoy a good drink, La Taberna Lupulo and 3 Cuernos offer an excellent experience. Although I’ve been sober since 2020, these spots were my favorites back when I enjoyed a drink or two.
  • Lastly, take a leisurely stroll through the town to fully immerse yourself in the local culture. Bar hopping can be a fun way to explore and discover new and exciting bars, each with its own unique ambiance.
3. El Yunque

Nestled within Puerto Rico, El Yunque stands as the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers. This lush paradise is brimming with a rich variety of flora and fauna, and it’s further beautified by AMAZING cascading waterfalls that offer a perfect balance of serenity and adventure.

As someone who is completely enchanted by stunning waterfalls, I find El Yunque absolutely magical. The forest is alive with an enchanting symphony of sounds, from the soothing rush of waterfalls to the distinctive chorus of the coquí frogs. While frogs may not be my preferred creatures, their melodious croaking in El Yunque creates a mesmerizing atmosphere. This rainforest offers an immersive experience that creates a profound connection with nature, and it’s an experience I wholeheartedly recommend.

Access to this natural wonder is carefully managed to preserve its beauty, and at times, reservations are required. Fortunately, securing a tour through Expedia can make your planning process worry-free, ensuring a seamless start to your adventure.

However, a word of caution from my own misadventures – watch out for those tempting fiberglass tubes (See the video to understand what I am referring too). They might seem like an invitation for a wild slide, but trust me, the rash they leave behind is far from amusing. I learned this the hard way back in 2014, and the memory of the pain and itchiness lingers!

For those planning a visit, I recommend checking out some essential gear on my Amazon affiliate page to make your trip comfortable and memorable. From eco-friendly sunscreen to durable hiking shoes, I’ve curated a list of products that are perfect for exploring El Yunque. Check them out here.

4.  Bahía Bioluminiscente

If you have yet to witness this marvel, then THIS IS A MUST. Begin your journey with a mesmerizing kayak tour in Bahía Bioluminiscente, where the waters are illuminated with an unearthly light. Notably, Vieques offers the brightest bioluminescence, closely followed by Fajardo and La Parguera, Cabo Rojo follow closely. As dusk envelops the sky, each stroke of your paddle ignites a luminous blue-green trail, courtesy of the bay’s microscopic inhabitants. This adventure is more than just an activity; it’s an otherworldly experience that transforms the night into a spectacle of nature’s brilliance. So, make sure you don’t miss this magical display!

5. Gozalandia

Nestled in the heart of San Sebastian, it’s one of my personal favorites, Gozalandia. It’s is a not-so-secret, secret waterfall that has captured the hearts of both locals and travelers alike. Its growing popularity and easy accessibility have transformed it into a favorite destination for those looking to indulge in the beauty of Puerto Rico’s natural landscapes.

In this vibrant setting, the adventurous spirit thrives with activities like cliff jumping, offering a thrilling experience as you can plunge into the refreshing waters from safely marked points (that’s me in the picture, taking the leap!). Alternatively, for those seeking a calmer experience, the more tranquil areas of the falls provide the ideal spot for a leisurely swim or simply soaking in the sun-dappled waters.

Beyond the water, Gozalandia becomes a communal haven, where families and friends gather to share meals and laughter under the canopy of trees. The soothing sounds of the falls create a perfect backdrop for a day spent in nature’s embrace.

Gozalandia is a living testament to the island’s dedication to preserving and sharing its natural wonders. It embodies the essence of Puerto Rico – a celebration of its stunning beauty, vibrant spirit, and communal warmth. 6. Crash Boat

Crash Boat Beach, one of Puerto Rico’s most beloved beaches, and my favorite on in the WORLD! Beckons with its golden sands and crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimmers and snorkelers. Make it a mission to find the sunken bicycle – which I am yet to find :(! This beach, with its vibrant marine life and remnants of a historic pier, is an absolute paradise for photographers and ocean enthusiasts alike.

As you stroll along the shore, don’t miss out on trying a “pincho” from local street vendors. These delicious skewers are a must-try culinary delight – treat yourself! They are also SUPER cheap – or at least they were… haven’t had a “pincho” in a while.

After soaking up the sun and enjoying the refreshing waters, I recommend a short drive to Huellas for a dining experience you won’t forget. This restaurant, I love! It offers exquisite fish dishes that are simply unmatched.

For those craving a wider range of options, Desecheo is your go-to. Offering both local and international cuisine, it’s the perfect place to cap off a day at the beach.

Crash Boat Beach offers something for everyone – whether you’re lounging on the shore, diving into the waves like I do in my video, or exploring the underwater wonders. And with excellent dining choices like Huellas and Desecheo nearby, your beach day promises to be as tantalizing to your taste buds as it is soothing to your soul.
